Liturgy of the Word for Children

What is Liturgy of the Word for Children?

Liturgy of the Word with Children (LWC) is a special part of the Sunday Mass—a liturgical adaptation that provides an environment for “…active, conscious, authentic” participation of young children in the Liturgy of the Word proclaimed at Mass. Following the Directory for Masses with Children (1973), LWC presents Scripture in a simpler, age-appropriate way, allowing children to hear God’s Word and respond in ways that reflect their own experience and understanding.

Who Can Attend:

  • Open to children ages 3 through 2nd Grade
  • Divided into two groups: Ages 3–5 and Kindergarten–2nd Grade

When Does it Take Place:

  • Offered during the 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM Sunday Masses from Sunday, September 7, 2025 through Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2026

How it works:

After the Gloria, Fr. Ed will dismiss the children from the main assembly. They will return to the Worship Space after the Presentation of the Gifts.

  • Children ages 3 to 5 will meet in the St. John Paul the Great Room
  • Children in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade will meet in the Bishop Povish Room

Parents are welcome to accompany their children, especially if it helps them feel more comfortable.

We look forward to sharing God’s Word with your children in a joyful and age-appropriate way!
